Dr. Emily Newman, DVM
Practice Owner | VeterinarianDr. Emily Newman has been part of the Bilmar story since 2006 and became the practice's owner in 2016 — carrying forward a tradition of community-rooted veterinary care that stretches back to 1945.
A graduate of Colorado State University's College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (Class of 2000), Emily began her career in Washington, D.C. and Greenwich, Connecticut before the Berkshires claimed her for good. She arrived in 2002, fell in love with the region, and built her roots here through clinic work and house calls before finding her professional home at Bilmar.
Her clinical interests span wellness and preventive care, geriatric medicine, wound management, and integrative approaches — she holds certifications in natural nutrition (CIVT), veterinary chiropractic, and Reiki, and is completing advanced training in Myofascial and Manual Therapy through the Chi Institute. She is equally committed to the growth and wellbeing of the people around her: her staff are, in her view, essential members not just of the team but of this community.
Dr. Newman lives in New Marlborough with her family and more animals than she will officially count.
Dr. Stephanie James, DVM, CVA, CVCH, CVFT, CVMM
Veterinarian | TCVM SpecialistDr. Stephanie James brings a rare depth of training and a genuinely integrative perspective to her work with animals. She is a Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist (CVA), Certified Veterinary Chinese Herbalist (CVCH), Certified Food Therapist (CVFT), and Veterinary Medical Manipulator (CVMM), with advanced study through the Chi Institute and the Integrative Veterinary Medical Institute.
Her path to small animal medicine is anything but conventional. After completing her DVM at the University of Minnesota and an internship at Angell Memorial, Dr. James pursued a residency in zoological medicine at the Bronx Zoo — and went on to serve as a staff veterinarian at major U.S. zoos for more than a decade. That foundation in complex, species-diverse medicine informs everything she does today.
Dr. James joined Bilmar in 2011, offering both conventional veterinary care and the full range of her integrative expertise. Her particular passions are geriatric, palliative, and hospice medicine — accompanying animals and their families with skill and steadiness through every stage of life. She also brings deep experience in internal medicine and musculoskeletal conditions, and her acupuncture and TCVM work extends well beyond pain management into whole-body support.
Dr. Hanan Caine, VMD
VeterinarianDr. Hanan Caine brings more than three decades of veterinary experience to Bilmar, along with a breadth of clinical interests that has made him a beloved fixture of Berkshire County animal care.
A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine (Class of 1989), Dr. Caine spent his early career in general and emergency medicine at large practices in New Jersey and Manhattan. He joined Bilmar in 2001 and has been here ever since.
His special interests include soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, laser surgery, dermatology, and exotic animal medicine. Due to longstanding demand, Dr. Caine is currently unable to accept new bird and reptile patients. He lives locally with his family, his corgi Newt, shepherd Violet, and cat Acorn.
Dr. Amanda Nee, DVM, MPH
VeterinarianDr. Amanda Nee is a strong believer in a ‘One Health” approach to her medical practice, considering the human, animal, environmental and community impacts of prevention and treatment of disease.
Dr. Nee’s path to veterinary medicine started with her agricultural education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. From there, she pursued the dual Masters in Public Health and Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine degree program at Tufts University.
After graduation in 2018, Dr. Nee attended Cornell’s Summer Dairy Institute and began work as a mixed animal mobile veterinarian in her home state of New Jersey. Building on her extensive small animal education at Tufts, she developed a love for treating working dogs, resilient barn cats, and her own dog, Xoe. She joined Bilmar Veterinary Services in the spring of 2020, and although she predominantly treats dogs and cats, she extends farm animal services in-clinic to existing owners of canine and feline patients when possible. Dr. Nee is unable to provide farm calls at this time.
Dr. Nee is a proud member of the Great Barrington community, along with her wife, son, dogs Xoe and Goose, and cats Milo and Maui.
